Traffic cameras in Montenegro - caution on the coast and in Podgorica (MAP)

During 2020, the Ministry of Interior of Montenegro initiated a project to install CCTV cameras for public video surveillance in the largest cities in the country.

The aim of the project is primarily to increase the level of safety for all traffic participants, as well as to enhance the overall security of the population on urban streets, regional and local roads, especially during the summer tourist season when millions of vehicles pass through the traffic routes.

CCTV cameras in Montenegro have been identified at dozens of locations throughout the country, with the highest concentration expectedly in Podgorica, as well as in the busiest coastal cities - Budva and Bar.

As the project of the Montenegrin Traffic Police continues, it is expected that other cities such as Nikšić, Kotor, and Herceg Novi will soon be under video surveillance.

To comply with the Law on Personal Data Protection, all locations should have signage indicating that a specific public area is being recorded.

It is still unknown whether the newly installed cameras register traffic violations by reckless drivers, but it is always advisable to be cautious as any fines will be sent directly to the registered owner's address.
