Rosomač Pots | Natural Heritage of Serbia

Another one in a series of lesser-known, yet absolutely amazing canyons in Serbia is located in the southern part of the Stara Planina Nature Park, just about 30 kilometers east of Pirot. It is the Rosomač River Canyon, also known as Rosomač Pots, Rosomač Throat, or Slavinja Pots, as it is situated in the territory of the village of Slavinja.

Stretching for about 500 meters, not wider than 5 meters (sometimes even less than 1 meter), and with relatively shallow depths of only a few dozen meters, this canyon definitely doesn't stand out for its dimensions. If we also consider that the Rosomač River doesn't represent a significantly important and water-rich course, the question arises: what makes this canyon so attractive?!

Unfortunately, even the best storytellers and travel writers probably wouldn't be able to fully describe it in words. Rosomač Pots simply have to be seen and experienced, and the best time to do that is during the summer.

The Rosomač River Canyon is carved in highly layered sedimentary limestone rocks formed during the Jurassic period, about 150 million years ago. This part of Serbia was deep beneath the surface of the ancient Tetis Ocean, and after the sea withdrew from this area, the Rosomač River found its path here.

For millions of years, the Rosomač River gradually carved this canyon, revealing layer by layer in the Earth's crust. As a result, we can witness an extremely attractive and unique relief of the river valley that we can see today, just 20 minutes or about a kilometer and a half upstream from the village of Slavinja.

Layers ranging from just a few centimeters to half a meter in width, besides being visually stunning, also have great geological and paleontological value, as careful observation can reveal hundreds of fossils.

However, it's not only the valley sides of the canyon that make it so spectacular. Namely, rocky barriers in the riverbed are the cause of numerous smaller and larger waterfalls, and the consequences of this long-lasting overflow of water are deep indentations, the so-called giant pots, filled with crystal-clear water.

Although this sight can be completely irresistible for swimmers in the summer months, it should be noted that the water of the Rosomač ka River is almost icy for the majority of the year, and even in summer, it doesn't exceed about 15 degrees Celsius.

This exceptional natural monument, although relatively easily accessible, is still not fully exploited for tourism, and it remains a destination where only true nature lovers and adventurers can be encountered.

The canyon itself is relatively easily passable with a little adrenaline rush, and camping is possible in its immediate vicinity.

As part of the Stara Planina Nature Park, which itself is rich in natural beauty, Rosomač River Canyon represents a precious object of Serbia's geoheritage and a natural attraction that makes it worth exploring the Pirot region from any part of Serbia.
