National Museum in Zrenjanin | Museums of Serbia

National Museum in Zrenjanin is dedicated to the protection and preservation of the cultural heritage of Central Banat.

The Municipal Committee established the museum in 1906 under the name Museum of Torontal County, but this cultural institution started operating five years later.

The museum's collection consists of over 33,000 exhibits, categorized into five departments. The cultural heritage of Central Banat is presented through the Permanent Museum Exhibition, which includes the following sections:

  • Natural History
  • Archaeology
  • Ethnology
  • History
  • Fine Arts

The Fine Arts section of the Permanent Exhibition is divided into visual and applied arts. The collection of applied arts includes porcelain, glass, and metal objects, faience objects, and pieces of period furniture.

The Sports History Room is particularly interesting and part of the historical department. In addition to ancient and modern history, the exhibition also includes original historical documents, three-dimensional objects, and photographs. Visitors are mostly drawn to examples of swords from the 11th and 12th centuries, seals, cold and firearms from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as the original flag of Torontal County.

The diorama display of the natural world from the Banat region and the three-dimensional exhibition of fossil remains represent the natural history collection. The archaeological collection of the Zrenjanin Museum is one of the richest collections in Serbia, covering the period from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

The ethnology department presents the interiors of guest rooms from the 19th and 20th centuries. These rooms include Serbian, Hungarian, Romanian, and Slovak rooms, as well as a Serbian kitchen from that period. This part of the museum showcases agricultural, livestock, and other artisanal objects, as well as costumes worn by the peoples of Central Banat. The ethnology department clearly illustrates the mutual influence of different cultures in the Vojvodina region.

The National Museum in Zrenjanin attracts public attention due to several important collections, such as:

  • Collection of firearms and cold weapons
  • Collection of significant paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries
