National Museum in Kruševac | Museums in Serbia

The National Museum in Kruševac is dedicated to collecting, protecting, and preserving the material and immaterial cultural heritage of the Kruševac region and its surroundings.

This institution holds a significant place in the tourist and cultural offer of Kruševac and is located near the remains of the palace of Prince Lazar and the Lazarica Church. It was originally housed in the Simić House, and today the National Museum in Kruševac is located in an archaeological park.

The permanent museum exhibition is housed in the former Kruševac Gymnasium, a building constructed in 1863 in the Neoclassical style. The building is adorned with Secessionist decorative elements from 1908.

The Museum's collection recalls a culture and tradition spanning six millennia, comprising archival material dating from prehistory to the mid-20th century. Today, there are over 23,000 preserved artifacts belonging to the natural history, archaeological, ethnological, historical, cultural-historical, archaeological, and fine art collections. Various museum objects testify to prehistory, antiquity, the Middle Ages, the period of Turkish rule, the restoration of Serbian statehood, and more.

The Stalna postavka (permanent exhibition) includes pottery, prehistoric and ancient jewelry. The collection of medieval weapons and tools, jewelry, coins, and ceramics is particularly attention-grabbing, with notable exhibits such as a replica of Prince Lazar's dress, a model of the Vidovdan Temple by Ivan Meštrović, the legacy of the Binički family, and the musical manuscript of the legendary composition "March on the Drina".

The memorial collection of Dragoslav Vasiljević Figa and Milan Milovanović is part of the museum exhibition, as well as the legacies of Stevan and Stanislav Binički and the Mihailović sisters.

The Kruševac National Museum was opened in 1951. It is a regional cultural institution that showcases the cultural heritage of the Rasina District. It consists of four city facilities:

  • Central building in Kruševac
  • Art Gallery
  • Simić House
  • Memorial Complex Slobodište

In addition to the permanent exhibition spanning two floors, the central building also has a large hall used for lectures, occasional thematic exhibitions, and more. Apart from research, the Museum also carries out cultural, educational, and publishing activities.

The Art Gallery displays artwork in five rooms. It is a connected exhibition space that is authentic, as it was established in the early 20th century. The Simić House showcases a permanent exhibition depicting a typical Kruševac bourgeois home from the early 19th century.

The concept of Bogdan Bogdanović was to create the Memorial Complex Slobodište. This was realized in the 1960s on the site of a mass execution during World War II.

The Kruševac National Museum, as one of the biggest city attractions, is open to visitors on weekdays and Saturdays from 8 am to 3 pm. The ticket price is 150 dinars, and for group visits, a minimum of 12 people is required.
