The Jadar Museum in Loznica | Museums of Serbia

The Jadar Museum is one of the museums in the Podrinje region, preserving the memory of the local population and being one of the significant tourist attractions in Loznica.

The museum complex, of a comprehensive type, was opened in the building of the former "Old Pharmacy" which was constructed in the early 20th century in 1987. The occasion for opening this cultural center was the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Vuk Stefanović Karadžić.

Previously, the ground floor of the building housed the first pharmacy in Loznica, and as an exceptional example of urban architecture, the building was declared a cultural heritage of exceptional importance.

The museum now houses approximately 5,000 exhibits that belonged to the inhabitants of Jadar, tracing their development from prehistory to 1950. Visitors find the first editions of many books and personal items of notable Loznica residents, primarily Vuk Stefanović Karadžić and Jovan Cvijić, very interesting.

The permanent exhibition of the Jadar Museum consists of items found in the territory of Ljubovija, Krupanj, Mali Zvornik, and Loznica. The artifacts represent the life and work of people in the Podrinje region from the Paleolithic era until 1950. The museum contains archaeological, historical, ethnological, numismatic, and artistic collections, as well as a collection of orders and over 1,500 photographs and documents.

The area of Jadar has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and objects reminiscent of that era are exhibited in the Loznica museum, as well as items preserving the memory of the citizens of Loznica. The cultural institution also houses a painting of Tinka Morozov, the widow of the famous Serbian poet Vladislav Petković Dis.

Fossil remains, stone and ceramic objects, textiles, and jewelry are displayed chronologically. Numerous objects belonging to the Illyrians testify to their settlement in these areas, while photographs depict how the inhabitants of the Podrinje region transported wooden materials.

The trading family Katić was one of the most respected in Loznica at the beginning of the last century, and today a replica of their living room is preserved in the Museum, as well as Mrs. Katić's original footwear.

Personal belongings and exhibits of Jovan Cvijić occupy a special place, and the Jadar Museum also preserves artifacts from the contemporary era, as well as the only sample of jadarite, a very precious and rare mineral.

Since 2017, the museum has also exhibited a monoxyl, an ancient boat found in the village of Jelav. Research shows that it dates back to the late 17th century.

Visitors are particularly drawn to the story of the young war hero Momčilo Gavrić, who, at the age of only eight, survived the retreat through Albania and the Salonika Front with the Serbian army during World War I. Mr. Gavrić, even in his old age, was present at the museum's opening.

Visitors can learn about the past and history of Rađevina and Azbukovica at the Jadar Museum in Loznica on weekdays, from Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 7 pm.
