International Mountain Day | Funny Holidays

"Sacred Mountains..."

Defined as landscapes with an elevation above 500 meters, mountains cover more than ¼ of the Earth's total land area and represent a true treasure trove of our planet's natural wealth.

Their local and global geographical, ecological, and touristic significance has been captured in hundreds of documentaries, written about in thousands of books, millions of articles, scholarly papers, scientific studies, and popular travelogues.

Besides being home to nearly 20% of the world's population, mountains provide drinking water for a far greater percentage of the planet's inhabitants, making them perhaps crucial for the sustainability of life on Earth.

Due to their inexplicable magic, picturesque landscapes, clean air, and unspoiled nature, mountains serve as an eternal inspiration for naturalists, scientists, artists, and a beloved tourist destination for a significant part of humanity—adventurers, mountain hiking enthusiasts, and winter sports lovers.

To acknowledge all of this and more, the United Nations established International Mountain Day on December 11, 2003, which is symbolically celebrated each year through various actions, conferences, and discussions on the preservation of mountain biodiversity.

How to celebrate Mountain Day?

Raising awareness about the importance of conserving mountainous regions is undoubtedly of great significance, but we'll leave that to institutions and organizations involved in environmental education.

For personal celebrations of this day, we recommend more creative and undoubtedly interesting options. As Serbia is mostly composed of mountains, there are plenty of opportunities for a meaningful "celebration" of International Mountain Day, and here are just a few suggestions:

  • Organize a trip with friends and "conquer" the summit of the nearest mountain.
  • If you're from Belgrade, visit Avala and Kosmaj in one day.
  • Plan your winter vacation on a mountain for the upcoming season.
  • Take the opportunity to stay at one of the numerous mountain lodges in Serbia.
  • Join a local mountaineering club and participate in their activities.
  • Get your mountain bike ready and prepare it for the first sunny day.
  • Sign the online petition against the destruction of mountain rivers and the construction of mini-hydroelectric power plants in Serbia.
