Places with Best Pancakes in Belgrade

Pancakes are probably one of the favorite traditional desserts in Serbia.

Prepared even before pancake shops as hospitality establishments existed, and even before thin Teflon pans and stoves were invented, they still remind many of us of childhood and the unusual joy that the smell of pancake baking and especially their taste evokes.

Whether they are simply sprinkled with sugar or ground walnuts, spread with honey, jam, or preserves, and more recently with various creams and toppings with numerous additives, pancakes are something that excites most of us more than any other sweet treat.

In addition to the pleasant aroma and authentic rolled and folded shapes, the secret probably lies in the wide selection of fillings and toppings that turn this nutritionally simple mixture of eggs, flour, and water into a dessert that offers the widest range of sweet flavors. Thus, in recent decades, pancakes have become an essential part of Belgrade's fast food offering and can be tasted everywhere today.

However, a few establishments have perfected the preparation of this dessert, establishing themselves on Belgrade's pancake map as the best addresses to enjoy this delicacy.

Glumac

The famous "Glumac" is a pancake shop with probably the longest tradition in Belgrade. For years located in a cramped space of a small but always crowded venue on Braće Jugović Street, "Glumac" is now in a nicer and larger space, less than 100 meters away, on Dositejeva Street. This cult place has set the standard in the quality of ingredients and famously generous portion sizes for over 20 years, so its regular guests (and everyone becomes one sooner or later) often order their favorite pancakes right at the entrance, traditionally addressing them by their menu numbers.

Pinokio

"Pinokio" is another cult place for pancake lovers "on the go," but on the other side of the river, in Zemun. If you didn't know this, you'll realize it as soon as you approach the venue on Krađorđeva Street, based on the perpetual crowd (which should by no means discourage you). Widely known for generously filling their pancakes, "Pinokio" has gained international fame, and numerous foreign tourists do not miss the opportunity to indulge themselves for relatively little money. Simply put, "Pinokio" has become a geographical landmark for this part of the city, and not without reason.

Keops

Another well-known pancake shop in Zemun, which stands out not only for its traditionally delicious pancakes but also for its fantastic location, is "Keops". Located on the bank of the Danube, this relaxed boat-restaurant offers not only the pleasure of various flavors of sweet, savory, and "spaghetti pancakes" but also the enjoyment of an idyllic ambiance with a view of the great river, Veliko Ratno Ostrvo, and Kalemegdan Fortress. It's an ideal stop for refreshments during a relaxing walk along Kej Oslobođenja.

Milky

One of the newer pancake shops in the city, well on its way to becoming cult status in the future, is called "Milky" and can be found in two locations in the city (MilkyStari Grad and Vračar). In addition to the standard offering of top-quality pancakes with various toppings, the signature attraction of this pancake shop is the so-called "Veliki Milky Challenge" – a pancake weighing an incredible 2 kilograms that costs 1600 dinars, but if you manage to finish it within half an hour, it's free. It's quite a tempting offer, but even without it, there are plenty of reasons to visit "Milky."

Baloro

In the immediate neighborhood of Vračar's "Milky," you'll find "Baloro," a pancake shop where you can choose your own ingredients, fillings, and toppings, whether sweet or savory. Consequently, they also offer a vegan option, which is not a common practice in Belgrade's pancake shops, making "Baloro" stand out. It's true that the prices are slightly higher, likely due to the location. Delicious, beautifully decorated pancakes and generous portions are already an expected standard, and "Baloro" lives up to it.

Amigo

Criteria for the best pancakes in town are definitely diverse, but judging by customer ratings and online reviews, "Amigo" is a serious contender for the title of the best pancake shop in Belgrade. Located in the heart of the city, right next to the Russian cultural center and maternity hospital, "Amigo" offers excellent and relatively inexpensive pancakes as a given, along with a warm family atmosphere that keeps guests coming back. The consistency and unwavering quality over the years make this place highly recommended.

Prote.in

"Prote.in" restaurant is somewhat of an exception on this list, as it's not a pancake shop but a modern restaurant where pancakes are just one of the delicacies on their rich menu. However, these pancakes are so special and original that they deserve special mention. The pancakes served in this restaurant are in complete harmony with the restaurant's name and its healthy eating policy. They are made exclusively from egg whites and whey protein, with additions of fruit syrups, dark chocolate, and other natural and healthy ingredients. A true specialty among them is the (literally) blue pancakes.

Đerdan

Like "Prote.in," "Đerdan" restaurant is not a pancake shop but a classic and uniquely diverse restaurant of national cuisine, hidden in Učiteljsko naselje. Pancakes are also just one of the delicacies in the rich dessert menu that usually follows a meal. The pancakes at "Đerdan" carry the scent and taste that epitomize homemade pancakes as they were traditionally prepared. For those who have forgotten what it was like 30 years ago, here's an opportunity to reminisce, and for those who don't remember but love pancakes, it's highly recommended to give them a try.
